Poke Loa opening third location at South Market in CBD

Poke Loa soon will open a third location in New Orleans. The original location — the first all-poke restaurant in New Orleans — opened on Magazine Street in February.

Then, in June, the owners said a second location was coming to Old Metairie in the fall. It is under construction.

Now, they’ve announced a third location will be coming to the South Market District, where a growing number of restaurants are opening.

Poke Loa will be at 939 Girod St., Unit 2 in the Central Business District.

What is poke? Pronounced “POKE-ay,” it is a dish that started in Hawaii as a snack of cubed, raw fish. Now, it often is served in a bowl with rice and vegetables, and its popularity is growing.

At Poke Loa, diners build their own bowls from fresh fish — delivered twice daily — rice, vegetables and house-made sauces. The restaurants also serve a flavored and “custom blended iced tea” from Coast Roast in New Orleans. For dessert, they serve what they call a mochi bar made from pounded Japanese sticky rice, surrounding ice cream.

The restaurants were started by New Orleanian Joe Reiss, his sister, NOLA Couture founder Cecile Tanguis, and a group of local investors.

Like the Magazine Street location, the CBD restaurant will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
