Medical District Update
10.24.2011
Work is now fully underway and rapidly progressing on nearly $3 billion of new Medical District projects including the new VA and LSU Medical Centers, The New Orleans BioInnovation Center and The Louisiana Cancer Research Center. The projects, expected to create over 7,000 jobs in the coming years, are laying the foundation for a Biosciences Corridor that will ultimately add over 20,000 jobs to the local economy and make New Orleans and Louisiana a global leader in healthcare delivery and bioscience-related fields. The $65 million BioInnovation Center was completed in mid-2011 and the $100 million Cancer Research Center is on track for completion by the end of the year. Construction of the VA and LSU Centers represent the largest healthcare project underway worldwide and will generate nearly 5,000 construction period jobs between the two projects. VA delivery is anticipated to occur in late 2014 with the LSU Center expected to open in early 2015. South Market connects to the projects in just two streetcar stops via the Loyola extension.
