Julia Street is a special place any night of the week, but on the first Saturday evening in August it comes alive in a major celebration of art, food, and music known as Whitney White Linen Night. From 6-9 PM on Saturday, August 2nd, four blocks of Julia Street will be closed to traffic and a “huge, festive, uniquely New Orleans-style block party” will commence, free and open to the public. This is the 20th anniversary of Whitney White Linen Night, so expect a large crowd of people decked out in their finest white attire.
The number of galleries, vendors, entertainment, events, and after-parties can be daunting, so we’ve done our best to feature some of the highlights here. The event is hosted by the Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans (CAC), and more information can be found on their website. If we’ve missed anything, please let us know in the comments!
There are nearly twenty galleries open for Whitney White Linen Night, each with their own unique exhibitions. The Arthur Roger Gallery will feature three different artistic mediums on display: oil block prints, color photographs, and digital video. The George Rodrique Foundation of the Arts will display student winners from the 2014 Scholarship Art Contest, and the YAYA Gallery will spotlight various youth artist’s glass, painting, and mixed-media creations. There will be many more must-see exhibitions, so make sure to visit plenty of the galleries as you make your way down Julia Street.
This being a New Orleans event, food is a major factor. CAC has released a complete list of participating vendors on their website, and it looks like some of our CBD neighbors are participating! Some of the great restaurants include Le Foret, Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant, Marcello’s Restaurant & Wine Bar, Phil’s Grill, and Pinkberry.
There will be live, local music on three stages, featuring Egg Yolk Jubilee, Mahayla, and The Unnaturals.
Events and After-Parties
Contemporary Arts Center: The place to be before and after will certainly be the CAC — they’ll be hosting an opening reception beginning at 6 PM, and the official after-party will kick-off at 9 PM with a cash bar, local cuisine, a DJ dance party, and performances by artists from Mark of the Feminine.
504ward Connections Party: This party will benefit the 504ward organization, a “collaborative movement designed to retain the influx of young talent
REpurposingNOLA Shop Anniversary Party: Our friends at REpurposingNOLA will be hosting a Whitney White Linen Night event for the fashionably-minded, described as a party full of “fashion, open bar bubbles and cocktails, and sultry fun.”
